  1. The comparative study of animal behaviour in
  2. its natural setting. Ethology is concerned
  3. with the causal mechanisms (both the stimuli
  4. that elicit behaviour and the physiological
  5. mechanisms controlling it), as well as the
  6. development of behaviour, its function, and
  7. its evolutionary history. Ethology was
  8. pioneered during the 1930s by Konrad Lorenz
  9. and Karl von Frisch who, with Nikolaas
  10. Tinbergen, received the Nobel prize in 1973.
  11. Ethologists believe that the significance of
  12. an animal's behaviour can be understood only
  13. in its natural context, and emphasize the
  14. importance of field studies and an
  15. evolutionary perspective. A recent
  16. development within ethology is sociobiology,
  17. the study of the evolutionary function of
  18. social behaviour.
